April 26, 2007 - Bovine Trivia

Trivia Question:

A cow known as Elm Farm Ollie (also known as Nellie Jay) is a bona fide bovine folk hero. On February 18, 1930, Ollie became the very first cow to this. What did Elm Farm Ollie do?

Trivia Answer:

Elm Farm Ollie (known as "Nellie Jay" and post-flight as "Sky Queen") was the first cow to fly in an airplane, doing so on 18 February 1930, as part of the International Air Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. On the same trip, which covered 72 miles from Bismarck, Missouri, to St. Louis, she also became the first cow milked in flight.

A St. Louis newspaper trumpeted her mission as being "to blaze a trail for the transportation of livestock by air."

Elm Farm Ollie was reported to have been an unusually productive Guernsey cow, requiring three milkings a day and producing 24 quarts of milk during the flight itself. Wisconsin native Elsworth W. Bunce milked her, becoming the first man to milk a cow mid-flight. Elm Farm Ollie's milk was sealed into paper cartons which were parachuted to spectators below. Charles Lindbergh reportedly received a glass of the milk.

Although Elm Farm Ollie was born and raised in Bismarck, Missouri, it is largely in the dairy state of Wisconsin where her fame has lived on. The Mount Horeb Mustard Museum in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin sponsors a celebration of the groundbreaking cow every 18 February. Festivities have included the production of a lighthearted opera entitled Madame Butterfat.

April 19, 2007 - D'oh! Simpson's Trivia

On this date in history... The animated Family The Simpsons made their television debut on this date.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

In what year did The Simpson's first appear on TV?

TRIVIA ANSWER:

April 19, 1987 - 20 years ago tonight!

The Simpson family first appeared in animated form as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, with the first episode, "Good Night", airing on April 19, 1987. The family was crudely drawn, because creator Matt Groening had submitted basic sketches to the animators, assuming they would clean them up; instead they just traced over his drawings

After a three-season run on The Tracy Ullman Show, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time show debuting on December 17, 1989.

A feature-length film, The Simpsons Movie, is currently being produced, scheduled to be released on July 27, 2007.

Here's how the Simpson family looked for that first appearance 20 years ago on the Tracy Ullman Show. There have been some changes!

April 12, 2007 -- Special Trivia

OK. This one's going to be a bit special...

TRIVIA QUESTION:

What special thing did Lena Blackburne discover along the Delaware River in the 1930's?

A) Special Water
B) Special Grass
C) Special Feathers
D) Special Mud

TRIVIA ANSWER:

Special Mud.

Above is a photo of Lena Blackburne (center) with Eddie Collins (left) and Ty Cobb (right).

Lena Blackburne Baseball Rubbing Mud, has been removing the sheen from baseballs for just about every professional baseball team in the country.

Any knowledgeable baseball fan will tell you that the big league baseball teams never use brand new baseballs in a game. They're too shiny to play with. So, what do umpires use to prep the balls and dull the shine? New Jersey mud.

Blackburne made an unusual and valuable contribution to baseball when he discovered a special use for the clay from the Delaware River to take the shine off of baseballs before each game.

For a lot more on Rubbing Mud, go their web site at http://baseballrubbingmud.com/main.htm where you can buy your very own jar of mud for just $17.25 for the 8 ounce Personal Size!

Now here's the list of folks that checked into our net along with their answers. Congrats to many of you who said "mud" aka Mud People.
