October 25, 2007 - How Prepared Are You?

For the last two weeks we've had some Survey Questions for you when you checked in. I was going to go back to a Trivia Question today, but because of the wildfires this past week, I want to do one more survey question before we go back to having "mindless fun" with Trivia.

This week we have seen many people (some are saying up to 1 Million!) forced to evacuate their homes on short notice.

If you had to evacuate your home with 10 minutes notice, are you ready? Do you have your important papers ready to go? Your medicines? A "Go Bag" packed and waiting? A full tank of gas in your car?

SURVEY QUESTION:

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being not prepared at all and 10 being totally ready) how prepared are you to evacuate your home on short notice?

I'll record your answers and give an average at the end of the net.

October 11, 2007 -- Radio Preparedness Trivia

Tonight's trivia question is a bit different. In fact, it's not a trivia question at all. It's more like a poll. In keeping with a theme of Radio Preparedness I'd like everyone to answer the following question:

TRIVIA QUESTION:

If AC power to your home went out 10 minutes before the net started, could you check in to the Thursday Night Net from your house?

In other words, Do you have an HT with charged batteries, or would you need to go out to your car and use the mobile rig? Or maybe you have battery backup for your Ham station?

So, if there was no AC power, could you check in, and how???

TRIVIA ANSWER

There is no right or wrong answer. BUT... If you could not check in to the net without the use of AC power, maybe you need to think about just how prepared you REALLY are for an emergency.

October 4, 2007 -- Snoopy Trivia

On this date in history, October 4, Charlie Brown's pet beagle Snoopy made his first appearance.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

In what year did Snoopy first appear in the Peanuts comic strip?

TRIVIA ANSWER:

October 4, 1950, two days after the strip premiered.

Snoopy Makes His First Appearance in Peanuts

He was identified by name on November 10. Schulz was originally going to call him "Sniffy" until he discovered that name was used in a different comic strip.

Snoopy began his life in the strip as a fairly ordinary dog, but eventually evolved into perhaps the strip's most dynamic character - and among the most recognizable comic characters in the world.

Many of Peanuts' memorable moments come in Snoopy's daydream as a writer: his eternal opener on the typewriter "It was a dark and stormy night..." is taken from Edward George Bulwer-Lytton's 1830 novel Paul Clifford.

Possibly his most famous alter-ego is as the World War I Flying Ace, often seen battling his arch-enemy, the Red Baron. For this, he would climb to the top of his doghouse, don goggles and a scarf, and thus fly his Sopwith Camel (the type of plane flown by Arthur "Roy" Brown, who was credited with shooting down the Red Baron in World War I, and whose surname matches that of Snoopy's owner).

The Red Baron, like other adult figures in Peanuts, was never drawn in a strip; his presence was indicated through the bullet holes that would riddle the doghouse in a dogfight, and Snoopy's angry outbursts in response: "Curse you, Red Baron!" (usually accompanied by fist-shaking and a salute while his "Sopwith Camel" doghouse plummets to earth trailing smoke).
