October 26, 2006 - Time Zone Trivia

Trivia Question -

This Sunday at 2:00 AM we move the clocks back one hour as Daylight Saving Time ends and we go back to Standard Time. This got me thinking about time zones.

We’re all familiar with the Pacific Time Zone (I hope!) and the Central Time Zone and Eastern Time Zone, but how many time zones are there for the U.S. and its Territories?

Trivia Answer -

Nine.

  • Atlantic Standard Time
  • Eastern Standard Time
  • Central Standard Time
  • Mountain Standard Time
  • Pacific Standard Time
  • Alaska Standard Time
  • Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time
  • Samoa Standard Time
  • Chamorro Standard Time

Time zones in the U.S. are defined in the U.S. Code, Title 15, Chapter 6, Subchapter IX - Standard Time. The Department of Transportation is responsible for time zone boundaries.

By the way, Daylight Saving Time commonly begins in the northern hemisphere on the last Sunday in March or the first Sunday in April, and ends on the last Sunday in October. However, beginning in 2007, the United States will begin observing DST from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November. (Studies will determine if this remains permanent.)

October 12, 2006 - Macintosh Trivia

Trivia Question -

On this day in history... October 12, 1823, Charles Macintosh of Scotland sold the very first one of these. What did Charles Macintosh invent and sell?

Trivia Answer -

The Rain Coat

Charles Macintosh (December 29, 1766 - July 25, 1843) was a Scottish chemist and inventor of waterproof fabrics. Charles Macintosh patented his invention for waterproof cloth in 1823. The Mackintosh is a form of waterproof raincoat, first sold in 1824, made out of rubberized fabric. Essentially, Macintosh discovered a method of joining two sheets of fabric together with soluble India rubber and allowing them to dry.

The Mackintosh is named after its Scottish inventor Charles Macintosh: note the added letter 'k' in the name of the garment. The first Mackintosh coats were made in the family's textile factory, Chas Macintosh and Co. of Glasgow. But in 1830 the company merged with the clothing company of Thomas Hancock in Manchester. Hancock had also been experimenting with rubber-coated fabrics since 1819.

Early coats had problems with smell and a tendency to melt in hot weather, but Hancock further improved their waterproof fabrics, patenting a method for vulcanizing rubber in 1843, which solved many of the problems.

Although the Mackintosh style of coat has become generic, a genuine Mackintosh coat should be made from rubberized or rubber laminated material.

October 5, 2006 - Baseball Trivia

October 5, 2006 - Baseball Trivia

Trivia Question -

On this day in history... The World Series was broadcast on radio for the first time. What year was it?

Trivia Answer -

1921.

WJZ in Newark, New Jersey, was the first to broadcast the 1921 World Series. Tommy Cowan recreated the games between the New York Yankees and New York Giants from reports that were phoned in from the stadiums.

Also interesting, for the first time in Series history, all the games were played in the same park as the Yankees and Giants shared the Polo Grounds.

The Giants beat the Yankees 5 games to 3 to win the 1921 World Series.
