October 26, 2006 - Time Zone Trivia

Trivia Question -

This Sunday at 2:00 AM we move the clocks back one hour as Daylight Saving Time ends and we go back to Standard Time. This got me thinking about time zones.

We’re all familiar with the Pacific Time Zone (I hope!) and the Central Time Zone and Eastern Time Zone, but how many time zones are there for the U.S. and its Territories?

Time zones in the U.S. are defined in the U.S. Code, Title 15, Chapter 6, Subchapter IX - Standard Time. The Department of Transportation is responsible for time zone boundaries.

By the way, Daylight Saving Time commonly begins in the northern hemisphere on the last Sunday in March or the first Sunday in April, and ends on the last Sunday in October. However, beginning in 2007, the United States will begin observing DST from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in November. (Studies will determine if this remains permanent.)
