September 20, 2007 -- Presidential Trivia

TRIVIA QUESTION:

To the chagrin of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Article Two of the Constitution states you must be a natural-born citizen of the U.S. to be President. But, some Presidents were not born in this country. How many presidents were not born in the United States?

TRIVIA ANSWER:

Eight Presidents were born British subjects before the establishment of the United States, although all were born in what would become the U.S. Listed below are those Presidents, and the state they were born in (after it became a state).

George Washington (Virginia)
John Adams (Massachusetts)
Thomas Jefferson (Virginia)
James Madison (Virginia)
James Monroe (Virginia)
John Q. Adams (Massachusetts)
Andrew Jackson (South Carolina)
William Harrison (Virginia)

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the US Constitution states that, No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. Thus, no naturalized citizen may serve as president.

Those who acquire US citizenship at birth while abroad (e.g. those born to US servicemen abroad, while on an U.S. army base) are probably also considered eligible, though it is unclear.

September 13, 2007 -- First Person Trivia

On this date in history... September 13, 1899, Henry Hale Bliss became the first person in the United States to do this. 42,642 people in the U.S. did it last year.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

What is Henry Bliss famous for doing first in 1899?

TRIVIA ANSWER:

He was the first person killed in a motor vehicle accident in the United States.

Henry Hale Bliss in 1873

He was disembarking from a streetcar at West 74th Street and Central Park West in New York City, when an electric-powered taxicab (Automobile No. 43) struck him and crushed his head and chest. He died from his injuries the next morning.

The driver of the taxicab was arrested and charged with manslaughter but was acquitted on the grounds that it was unintentional.

A plaque was dedicated at the site on September 13, 1999, to commemorate this event, it reads:

"Here at West 74th Street and Central Park West, Henry H. Bliss dismounted from a streetcar and was struck and knocked unconscious by an automobile on the evening of September 13, 1899. When Mr. Bliss, a New York real estate man, died the next morning from his injuries, he became the first recorded motor vehicle fatality in the Western Hemisphere. This sign was erected to remember Mr. Bliss on the centennial of his untimely death and to promote safety on our streets and highways."

The plaque's use of "Western Hemisphere" is inexact and should actually read The Americas or the New World. Bridget Driscoll was killed by a car at Hyde Park Corner in London in 1896, and Mary Ward was killed by a steam-powered car in Ireland in 1869.

September 6, 2007 -- Pilgrim Trivia

On this day in history...

On September 6, 1620, The Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England to Plymouth, Massachusetts.

TRIVIA QUESTION:

How many passengers -- not crew -- passengers -- set sail on the Mayflower on September 6, 1620?

TRIVIA ANSWER:

102 passengers plus a crew of between 25 and 30 made the 66 day voyage, arriving November 11th.

Mayflower in Plymouth Harbor by William Halsall (1882)

During the winter the passengers remained on board the 'Mayflower', suffering an outbreak of a contagious disease described as a mixture of scurvy, pneumonia and tuberculosis.

When it ended, there were only 53 persons still alive, half of the passengers and half of the crew. In spring, they built huts ashore, and on March 21, 1621, the surviving passengers left the 'Mayflower'.
