August 17, 2006 - Computer Trivia

Lot's of folks checking in tonight and lot's of folks getting the trivia question right! I'm just going to have to make these questions harder!

Trivia Question:

On this date in 1970, an inventor by the name of Douglas Engelbart received a patent for something that millions of people use with their computer. What did Douglas Engelbart invent?

A - The Computer Modem

B - The Computer Hard Disk Drive

C - The Computer Mouse

Trivia Answer:

C - The Computer Mouse

In 1970 Engelbart received a patent for the wooden shell with two metal wheels (computer mouse U.S. Patent 3,541,541), describing it in the patent application as an "X-Y position indicator for a display system". Engelbart later revealed that it was nicknamed the "mouse" because a wire tail came out the end.

He never received any royalties for his mouse invention, partly because his patent expired in 1987, before the personal computer revolution made the mouse an indispensable input device, and also because subsequent mice used different mechanisms that did not infringe upon the original patent.

Currently (at age 81 in 2006), he is the director of his own company, the Bootstrap Institute which he founded in 1988 with his daughter, Christina Engelbart. It is located in Fremont, California and is housed rent-free courtesy of the Logitech Corp., the world's largest manufacturer of computer mice.

    August 10, 2006 - Candid Camera Trivia

Tonight's trivia question is an "On This Day In History..." question.

    TRIVIA QUESTION:

On this day, August 10th, the program Candid Camera made its debut on television after being on radio for a while. In what year did the Candid Camera TV show first appear? Bonus Question: What was the show called on the radio?

    TRIVIA ANSWER:

1948. On the radio it was known as Candid Microphone.

Candid Camera is a long-running television series, created and produced by Allen Funt (whose photo is shown here), which initially appeared on radio as Candid Microphone in the 1940s, then screened in the United States on August 10 1948, with local versions produced around the world.

The show involved scenarios in which unwitting members of the public would be placed in a situation where unusual things began happening (caused by actors hired by the producers as well as various props, some ingenious). The victim of the prank's reactions would be filmed by a concealed camera, and at some stage the joke is finally revealed to them, when the victim would be told "Smile, you're on Candid Camera."

    August 3, 2006 - Submarine Trivia

I'm just going to have to make the trivia questions harder. You guys are too good. How did so many of you get the correct answer? I didn't think tonight's question was that easy!

    TRIVIA QUESTION:

On this date in history... the nuclear submarine USS Nautilus sailed under the polar ice cap and became the first ship to reach the geographic North Pole. In what year did this occur?

    TRIVIA ANSWER:

1958. USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine and the first vessel to complete a submerged transit across the North Pole.

Nautilus' keel was laid by Presiden Harry S. Truman on June 14, 1952, was christened and launched on January 21, 1954, and was commissioned on September 30, 1954.

On January 17, 1955 she put to sea for the first time.

After a failed attempt in June, 1958, on August 3, 1958 she sailed under the geographic North Pole, making history.

In the spring of 1979, Nautilus set out from Groton, Connecticut on her final voyage. She reached Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California on May 26, 1979 - her last day underway. She was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on March 3, 1980.

Nautilus now serves as a museum of submarine history at her present berth near the Naval Submarine Base New London, in Groton, Connecticut.
