August 3, 2006 - Submarine Trivia

I'm just going to have to make the trivia questions harder. You guys are too good. How did so many of you get the correct answer? I didn't think tonight's question was that easy!

TRIVIA QUESTION:

On this date in history... the nuclear submarine USS Nautilus sailed under the polar ice cap and became the first ship to reach the geographic North Pole. In what year did this occur?

TRIVIA ANSWER:

1958. USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine and the first vessel to complete a submerged transit across the North Pole.

Nautilus' keel was laid by Presiden Harry S. Truman on June 14, 1952, was christened and launched on January 21, 1954, and was commissioned on September 30, 1954.

On January 17, 1955 she put to sea for the first time.

After a failed attempt in June, 1958, on August 3, 1958 she sailed under the geographic North Pole, making history.

In the spring of 1979, Nautilus set out from Groton, Connecticut on her final voyage. She reached Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California on May 26, 1979 - her last day underway. She was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on March 3, 1980.

Nautilus now serves as a museum of submarine history at her present berth near the Naval Submarine Base New London, in Groton, Connecticut.
