April 19, 1987 - 20 years ago tonight!

The Simpson family first appeared in animated form as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, with the first episode, "Good Night", airing on April 19, 1987. The family was crudely drawn, because creator Matt Groening had submitted basic sketches to the animators, assuming they would clean them up; instead they just traced over his drawings

After a three-season run on The Tracy Ullman Show, the sketch was developed into a half-hour prime time show debuting on December 17, 1989.

A feature-length film, The Simpsons Movie, is currently being produced, scheduled to be released on July 27, 2007.
